Description
Low-maintenance shade-loving perennial plant, Bergenia is great for adding a little color to a darker corner or walkway of a garden. Nicknamed Pigsqueak, this plant has thick waxy leaves which squeak when rubbed together!
Plant 12 to 18 inches apart, and expect a foliage height of about 1 foot. In spring, the plant will grow a spike (12 – 16 inches tall) which will bloom purple pink flowers which will remain for a number of weeks.
Plant in a spot with well-drained, moist soil, and add compost to the bed as needed. Remove dead flower heads once spent. Bergenia is a slow growing plant, and the clump may be divided every 3 to 5 years. Do NOT prune off leaves for winter – it needs the nutrients.
This plant is poisonous to dogs.
